Starved of Western Television

Spending my first 10 months in Japan staying in a hotel, with a very poor selection of English television channels, i had to rely heavily on the internet to download programs. It`s amazing what you`ll watch when you have to, and Japanese TV has some merit, but every now and then i needed a fix of western television.

These days the internet is a veritable goldmine for the latest programs that have only just aired i the states being available for download, literally within hours.

I got right into several programs, mainly The Entourage and Prison Break although ther were several others like The Girls Next Door and Amercian Idol …. like i said, sometimes you need to watch western TV and you take what you get!

I write this post while i wait for Prison Break Season 3 Episode 1 to download, about 20 minutes done so far with 10 to go … if you`re not into Prison Break then do yourself a favour and download series 1 and 2 … it`s brillaint and watching at your leaisure is the only way to go.

If you are up to date with Prison Break then here`s the general info on where the stories at.

“Just when they thought they were out, they are pulled back in - for the most dangerous escape ever. Prison Break Season 3 finds Michael Scofield wrongly incarcerated in Sona, a hellish Panamanian prison where there are no rules, no guards and no escape.

A Lesson Learnt

As i dive further into the world of blogging, websites and generally making money online i`ve read and seen a lesson proven first hand. I recently read a post on John Chow dot com about commenting on other peoples blogs and specifically commenting first and i have to say the proof is in the pudding. I happened to pass by an interesting post of Johns and i past comment and low and behold, the king of the internet has stopped by none other than yours truly.

How did i know you ask? On the right hand side there`s a WordPress widget showing recent readers from MyBloglog and pictured 3rd in line next to my mate Motts ( sorry Ben your visit alone wasn`t worth a post but coupled with JC you get a mention) is John Chow … the man who`s gone from making zero this time last year to $17,828.61 for the month of August!

If my ever expanding collection of sites can generate anywhere near that level of income i`ll be very satisfied.

Japanese Television from Youtube

The  learning curve for WordPress has been steep but i`m getting the hang of it. I still haven`t sorted out uploading images to posts and will keep trying and may have better luck tomorrow from my work laptop that has an English OS.

In the meantime it`s time to try and embed a clip from youtube. I subscribe to a few Japanese channels on youtube and some of the content stil amazes me. I haven`t seen this actually clip on TV here but I`ve seen enough similar.

Video Clip removed until i can sort out a few issues.

Every night’s a “dining out” experience for me and this week was no different. I opted to try the local Okinawan restaurant over the road and i was impressed.

taco_rice.jpgThe place has a realy cool feel about it and the owners are all up for the introductions when you enter … i guess being a foreigner it`s still a novelty in some places.

とし と すすむ are the lads behind the place .. or Toshi and Susumu may mean a little more to some.

There`s nothing easy about ordering food in Japan but i knew that when i came here. My weekly Japanese lessons and the day to day study is paying off and i can quite capably order off the menu. It has taken some time though and the Kanji still poses a few problems.

You`d probably be surpirsed at some of the dishes and over the coming months i`ll be sure to sample a heap but for this week i went with the `Taco Rice` which is 3rd up from the bottom on the menu … when i work out how to post it.

Taco Rice (タコライス) is basically rice, spicy mince, salsa, lettuce, cheese and onions with an egg on top. Pretty hard to pass that up for about $8 and add a few glasses of the local brew and everyones going home happy.

The search for a theme begins

Now i’ve switched over to WordPress i need to find a theme suitable for what i want to do. I can gaurantee i won’t settle on the first so expect to see plenty of iterations over the next few weeks.

Why the change to WordPress you ask? It has a softer more rounded look about it would be my way of describing it. The tools used for developing and maintaining the site are built around ease of use, something that appeals to me greatly.

Like i said i’m still in the infancy stages of setting up the new blog so you can expect to see plenty of content being added in the near future. I’ve got a steep learning curve with editing CSS as opposed to HTML, which to a web developer wouldn’t be difficult at all but i’m a mere part time blogger with a keen interest to learn more about all things internet so it’s a steep learning curve for me!

The phrase Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second generation of web-based communities and hosted services — such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies — which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users. The term became popular following the first O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004,[1] and has since become widely adopted.
