Yes, the procedure is quite strict here with getting a phone. I know people with only a short time left on their visa’s had to pay 800 for the phone but i’m guessing they still had to sign up a basic plan …. i don’t think you’ll be able to buy a phone with no strings.

Do you need to sign and activate a contract when you buy the iPhone in Japan? Or can you buy the phone and bring it out of the country without a telco package plan? I’m planning to head to Tokyo tomorrow and plan to use it in Singapore.
