Earthquake In Japan Last Night

May 8, 2008 · 23 comments

Anyone that slept through last nights earthquake can sleep through anything. I on the other hand suffer insomnia at the best of times so a Magnitude 6.7 earthquake was enough to get me up and keep me up for the rest of the night.

Update: Check out the one from July 24th here.

Here’s the breakdown of last nights activity from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

I am new to Japan, living in Fuchu and I felt the earthquake last night at about 1.45am. Are you able to tell me whether these area normal event or is this a sign of something bigger approaching? It was my first earthquake so was a little scary.

thanks

My Friends Girlfriend lives in Tokyo, she felt them too, but Megan from what I’ve been told earthquakes are common in Japan, this many, this close together is rare, but Kristen & Erika don’t seem to be too worried, so you should be fine.

Normal event, happening reasonably often, the only difference is the size. Not a sign of something bigger approaching, they don’t work like that.

I dugg this one Neil. We didn’t get much sleep last night either. Earthquakes are a fact of life in Japan but you still get to wondering if/when they will end – the few seconds that they last can really seem like forever. Not sure about you but we are still feeling some small aftershocks in Chiba.

I got the original one at 1.20 ish … then it seemed to keep recurring until it really got moving at 1.45. ….. by this time i was well awake and stayed awake until 3.20 when i felt some more. No chance getting back to sleep, was in front of the TV by 4 and needless to say today has been a long day!

I heard the epicenter was 100 miles off of Tokyo. I can’t imagine how much it would suck if it was closer.

Yeh, 100 miles isn’t that far …. it could easily have been closer and who knows what the effects of that could be.

Thanks for the comments, I guess I will have to get used to them then. I am living in a four story apartemnt block on the third floor. If the earthquake was to get bigger what should i do? Sit under a table or door frame or head downstairs?

Should I keep a survival pack handy?

Any advise would be appreciated.

I’ve always wanted to experience an earthquake but probably not one as powerful as that…

Being from California, I’m used to it.

But, when the immediate newsflash came up in red characters, I started to wonder. They usually don’t bother me, though.

@Megan,
I have a survival pack close, radio, batteries , water , energy bars… living on the 8th floor I don’t know what good it would do if things go bad, but you could never say I didn’t try.
Generally by the time you realise it’s big, it is nearly too late I reckon…

I used to live in Fuchu too, a year ago, now I am living in Yokohama..
during my first year in Japan, I experienced several earthquake, at the first time It was so scary (I was living in 7th floor so I could feel even small earthquake which people in 4th floor wouldn`t feel), but after a year living here it becomes a common thing to me. Last night`s was quite big though, If i were still living in the room i stayed last year, I am sure it would have been scary..

I was in Christchurch, New Zealand, last december, when Gisborne, on the North Island, had an earthquake of 6.8 on the richter scale.

Even thought the two locations are 600 km apart, it felt as if a giant gorilla was shaking the building when I felt it in Christchurch.
