Free Hugs

February 4, 2009 · 33 comments

It seems everywhere you go these days there’s someone offering the Free Hugs that were started by Juan Mann in 2004 and gained international exposure in 2006 on youtube.

Maybe it’s due to market saturation but things are crook in Tullarook when this lass can’t get so much as a free hug in the few minutes i was there.

Free Hugs Japanese Girl

Not one punter dare make their way closer for a free hug.

Free Hugs Japanese Girl

As the minutes passed she looked more and more despondent.

Free Hugs Japanese Girl

The wind sweeping her hair across her lonely face.

Free Hugs Japanese Girl

Waiting and hoping for that one sweet embrace.

I was flying solo that day and didn’t have anyone to take a picture … and hence there was no hugging.

Check out the official Free Hugs Campaign site and also the video on youtube.

Hm, perhaps she’d have gotten more takers if her sign wasn’t in English?

Personally, I’d rather not give out free hugs to just anyone. There are some scary people that live in my city.

There’s plenty of others close by getting some loving ….. and the signs are always in English, 99% could read that i’m sure.

Is there some backstory as to why the signs are always in English? Seems kinda strange… I know it’s not the same as standing on the street corner in Omaha with FREE HUGS written in Kanjii, but still…

Not sure why ……… guess they’re expecting foreigners to take them up on the hugs.

I can’t believe you didn’t take the free hug (I know, most people would’ve said pics or it didn’t happen)!

Seems legit to me ^^ Or is there some type of scam? Like those crying girls in Akihabara?

I think it was legit ….. but then again i didn’t get close enough and get the hug. Maybe as was mentioned to me by someone else, had i hugged her my next post might have been “The Day I Lost My Wallet” or similar.

Free hugs are always fun. It makes everyone feel good. I usually hug the people giving them away in Shibuya.

It seems less risky to hug a guy than a girl like this XD The first thing that came to mind was “lawsuit”

Reply

27 Neil February 6, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Too true Steve …. much less enjoyable though.

28 Jordan February 9, 2009 at 10:49 am

I’d hug it.

Though I always suspect these free hug deals are really just pickpocket operations.

Reply

29 Neil February 9, 2009 at 2:07 pm

You and me both Jordan … the pickpockets that is.
