Spotted while walking up to Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto were these 2 Geisha, the one on the left doesn’t look too happy with me … but you get that on the big jobs.
Unfortunately there were masses of people around and this was the one and only picture i was able to get.

Is the one on the left a maiko perhaps? Her kimono and obi are tied rather poorly.
Both lips are painted indicating that if she was legitimate then she’d be a Geisha not a Maiko.
I’m going to say tourist then. No Geiko would be seen out in public with her kimono in such poor arrangement. – mboogiedown on flickr has a great selection of legitimate Geisha pics from Kyoto.

Real geishas or tourists dressed up as geishas? My guess is the latter. How can you tell anyway?

what a great shot!!!! My buddy lives in japan and he is constantly telling me that geisha’s are a thing of the past and not in existence anymore, but I always tell him, that they are. now here’s proof. i sent this to him!

These are tourists.. geisha don’t come out during the day in full make up… I have pics with ugly geisha too.. they should ban them haha they are ruining the real geisha’s reps
