Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji)

April 8, 2009 · 17 comments

The Golden Pavilion or Kinkaku-ji 金閣寺, as it’s known to the locals, was a major highlight of last weeks trip to Kyoto.

Once again i tried my hand at a few HDR images, both with different levels of aggressiveness applied, here’s one reasonably subtle.

Golden Pavilion

The 3 images i used to combine into one using photomatix were.

Overexposed …

Golden Pavilion

Normal exposure …

Golden Pavilion

Underexposed …

Golden Pavilion

Here’s all 3 combined to make another HDR image of the Golden Pavilion Temple, much more aggressive with the settings this time.

All images can be seen better by selecting each image directly or in the HDR gallery on flickr.

Which one do you like best?

Honestly, I like the underexposed picture best. It actually doesn’t look underexposed, it just looks right. :D
(obviously, I’m not a fan of HDR…)

I’m also voting for the underexposed shot. Or the top one. :)

I’m up for the under exposed one, a little tweaking in Photoshop and it would look very nice. Out of the HDR’s I like the 1st one best but with more aggression you could make the last one look like an Pastel drawing which is also a very cool look… get in and delete those annoying tourists on the deck of the temple… bloody moochers…

I have another one without those moochers in it …. will use that one for some photoshopping of the underexposed one.

I am a fan of HDR photography and dabble in it myself. It can produce some very dramatic and ‘over the top’ images but I challenge myself to produce images that are dramatic yet natural in appearance. Someone looking at it should be amazed at its depth and the colors but not distracted by its artificial look. Here is a link to a photo I took in Koh Samui that, I think, comes close:

But hey, everyone uses HDR a little differently. It’s your image, Neil, to do as you please. Keep up the good posts.

Beautiful pic Kyle!

I’m just starting out with and and using a bit of a ’suck it and see’ approach. I agree with the depth and colours point, that’s what really appeals to me too.

Really like the first one. The aggressive shot is very cool, though.

Last one looks like a drawing.

It does …. it’s a fine balance between reality and fake this HDR game.
