Today i finally had a chance to set up my new laptop, a Dell Precision 4300 N Series mobile workstation … also know as a hamburger with the lot.
It’s been under my desk for a week while i’ve finished a few projects, today i’ve spent a few hours getting it up and running, and i love it already.
What’s so good about it you ask? Turn away now if you don’t want to read boring geek stuff.
- Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9500 @ 2.60Ghz with 4 GB Ram
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 360M Graphics
- 200 GB HDD @ 7200 RPM
- DVD, Bluetooth, extra this and spare that ….. all the bells and whistles

To increase my screen real estate i have a 2nd monitor, a 24″ flat screen that runs a resolution the same as the laptop 1920 x 1200.
It’s amazing the difference it makes when you can extend your desktop across 2 screens, productivity is increased like you wouldn’t believe.

I’ve realised the benefit of this at home where i have my Sony Living Room PC plugged into a 40″ HD Sony Bravia TV, it just makes things easier to have lots of screen to play with.
Anyway, now i’ve got it pretty much set up i’ve got work to do. If you want to know more about the Dell Precision Mobile Workstations check out the Dell site.

mmmmmmmmmm WICKED laptop, you really are the GEEK arent you xxxxxxxxx
Geek with a capital G!
You are a big geek…then again for really getting a kick out of this and understanding it all, so am I….
no built in webcam though?
No, camera’s are against policy in the company …. well, taking them into secure parts of our office and customers sites are anyway.
Nice little set up you got there. I guess I should do the usual Mac FanBoy comment “Should have got a Mac”. LOL
24″ LCD’s seem to be the sweet spot for monitor size these days. I have a similar set up at work and I love it! Looking to get two 24’s for home.
Unfortunately Mac isn’t an option for the work i do, our software is pretty much windows only these days, HPUX etc support is being phased out …. and running windows on a mac isn’t an option either, unfortunately.
I’ll get a mac for home sometime soon though.
Just curious what you mean by running Windows on a Mac isn’t an option? You mean it’s against the rules to use Mac hardware in your company/office? Macs have been running Windows natively for several years now. I can only guess the graphics cards options aren’t sufficient outside of getting a Mac Pro?
Also, it looks like you are running Windows XP on your new Dell, so I am curious as to why you got 4GB of RAM on the Dell, unless it came with it by default, because it’s my understanding XP can’t utilize that much RAM.
I have a 24″ Dell LCD monitor hooked up to a MacBook and highly recommend both the 24″ size and Dell brand. The rare times I have to exclusively use the MacBook’s 13″ screen my productivity goes way, way down. I’d like to have two 24″ externals actually, if I ever get a Mac Pro.
Sort of against the rules …. Our software us certified to run on certain OS, Windows, HPUX ….. and requires specific graphics cards etc ….. if i differ from the certification then i’m not reflecting a true working environment and bug verification isn’t accurate.
Standardisation is massive across our company ….. needs to be with the volume of employees (450,000)
I don’t know the ins and outs of the RAM but there are ways of increasing the virtual memory to get 3Gb out of it with some tweaking. These machines are spec’d for our use by people that know a whole lot more about it than me so i just run with it.
Also we have a pretty big deal with Dell as a supplier so the discounts are hefty.
that’s a badass setup. I was thinking about investing into a new monitor as i hate having to sift through a million windows while i’m coding on my laptop.
Neil, you love your toys. No denying that…
But, you always put them to good use, which is more than I can say for myself.
I’ll show you the video camera on the weekend, see if i can’t get you enthused enough to buy yourself one for Xmas.
Would love to have a look at it.
whats that thing to the left of your laptop? is it a flywheel 4 editing video?
No, the big one is a SpacePilot http://www.3dconnexion.com/3dmouse/spacepilot.php the small round thing is a SpaceNavigator … primarily used for 3D design but works with google earth and other apps too.
Nice specs, but I don’t trust teh Dell. Had a couple of ‘em die on me. I’ve got the big clunky PC I built myself and the Mac laptop at home. Both of them are getting a bit long in the tooth, spec-wise, but they run like champs, so no complaints here.
The nerd in me is still jealous of Neil’s setup though.
*sob*
I so want a new PC
I could not live without my 24″ .
Damn Neil…4giggles That is plenty of mem under the hood!!!
Su-weet!!
I built my own rig. I should throw-up pics. But I’m happy to just sit back and admire that juicy hamburger
I love reading laptop monthly when I g…zzzzzzzzzzz
Tool. I know your more of a home desktop system man yourself Yevgeni, i remember the home office set up you used to have at home, on that glass table in the living area of Cruikshank street.
Haaaa, I just blushed Neil. Nothing funnier than me running the spray and wipe over the desk and working real hard to remove that mark only to realise that it was on the under side. For the record…it is still there. Lets just hope CSI dont ever have to run the glasses over my joint. I am very grateful however Neil, to you, for showing me that computers can be used for other things as well.
What is that flat thing to the left with the knob in the middle???
Ahhh, Space Navigator, works with things like Google Earth but mostly 3D simulation.
