Sort of against the rules .... Our software us certified to run on certain OS, Windows, HPUX ..... and requires specific graphics cards etc ..... if i differ from the certification then i'm not reflecting a true working environment and bug verification isn't accurate.

Standardisation is massive across our company ..... needs to be with the volume of employees (450,000)

I don't know the ins and outs of the RAM but there are ways of increasing the virtual memory to get 3Gb out of it with some tweaking. These machines are spec'd for our use by people that know a whole lot more about it than me so i just run with it.

Also we have a pretty big deal with Dell as a supplier so the discounts are hefty.

Just curious what you mean by running Windows on a Mac isn't an option? You mean it's against the rules to use Mac hardware in your company/office? Macs have been running Windows natively for several years now. I can only guess the graphics cards options aren't sufficient outside of getting a Mac Pro?

Also, it looks like you are running Windows XP on your new Dell, so I am curious as to why you got 4GB of RAM on the Dell, unless it came with it by default, because it's my understanding XP can't utilize that much RAM.

I have a 24" Dell LCD monitor hooked up to a MacBook and highly recommend both the 24" size and Dell brand. The rare times I have to exclusively use the MacBook's 13" screen my productivity goes way, way down. I'd like to have two 24" externals actually, if I ever get a Mac Pro.

Haaaa, I just blushed Neil. Nothing funnier than me running the spray and wipe over the desk and working real hard to remove that mark only to realise that it was on the under side. For the record...it is still there. Lets just hope CSI dont ever have to run the glasses over my joint. I am very grateful however Neil, to you, for showing me that computers can be used for other things as well.
