Japan Is Convenient #3

January 6, 2009 · 10 comments

It’s been a while since i remarked how convenient Japan can be at times and the other day while walking about in Shinjuku i was reminded. Take for example this locker system for storing your phone in and charging it kerb side.

You’d have to agree, there’s little more frustrating and useless than having a dead mobile phone and for units of 20 minutes to 100 minutes you can pop your phone in, plus a few yen, and get some gas in it.

The concept really needs no further explanation, the process for using it may on the other hand.

From what i can tell, provided there’s a spare box it’s just a matter of selection the make and or type of phone, then the box you put it in and press #

This particular set of phone charging locker things was outside of Yodobashi near West Exit.

The softbank between Harajuku and Omotesando Hills offers also for free this service (maybe to softbank user only though…). Anyway convenient for sure!

Seriously, more countries need to employ convenient automated services like that.

That is indeed convenient, I don’t think I’d ever use it though ^^

From what I can tell many keitai (cell phone shops) in Japan now provide this service. I have never used it but I think it is great. A friend of mine recently bought a solar powered cell phone charger, similar to the ones you could buy in convenience stores fitted with standard batteries but completely solar powered.

Can’t recall having seen one of those myself, but that’s pretty damn convenient.

Brilliant solution to a universal problem. And then you have “Hole in the Wall,” which is not. Curious culture.

Another ingenious Japanese invention: scooters with self-stabilizing platforms for transporting bowls of soup without spilling them:

Cool.

I’d never use it but…it’s still cool nonetheless ;)

They need babysitter-lockers that actually take the charge out of the kid.
Now, that would be convenient.
