JR Yamanote Line – Ebisu

March 9, 2008 · 26 comments

The 2nd stop for me of the 29 Stops on the JR Yamanote Line is Ebisu, it’s 3 stations from home so an easy one to get too. Prior to today i’d only been out to Ebisu once and that was for an afternoon at the Ebisu Beer Hall with the other members of the language school i was attending.

Ebisu, formally Yebisu before the ‘ye’ was dropped for just an ‘e’ also happens to be a popular beer in Japan and it was actually the beer that named the town and the railway station, not the other way around as many would imagine.

As a place Ebisu would best be described as a quiet place located in the Shibuya ward. Ebisu is conveniently situated next to Shibuya and Roppongi so it’s only a matter of heading on the Yamanote Line or Hibiya Line for a few stops to get into the thick of it. Having said that, there is no shortage of bars and restaurants all with their own individual style which can keep you occupied for many a lazy evening.

Ebisu

Ebisu’s main tourist attraction tends to be centered around the newer Yebisu Garden Place and the Westin hotel area. Accessible from the Ebisu Station East Exit via the “Yebisu Skywalk” covered moving walkway, it features the headquarters of Sapporo Breweries, The Beer Museum Yebisu and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

“Ebisu was founded around 1928 as a community developed around the Japan Beer Brewery Company facilities where the Yebisu Garden Place now stands. Yebisu Beer, named for Ebisu, one of the Japanese Seven Gods of Fortune, was introduced in 1890 by Japan Beer and has long been a local favorite. The area adopted its name from the train station built in 1901 by the company to facilitate distribution of its beer. Japan Beer has since reorganized and was renamed Sapporo Breweries Ltd. After the beer factories were moved to Chiba in 1988, the area was redeveloped as the Yebisu Garden Place, opened to the public in 1994.”

I took the Sky Walk out to Garden Palace.

Ebisu

Upon arriving outside the station you’re met with pretty peaceful surrounds.

Ebisu

Walking around Garden Palace there’s a big mixture between concrete and water features.

Ebisu

And a random Harpist playing for the general public.

Ebisu

Ebisu

Ebisu

There’s a wealth of shops in Garden Palace with many big brand names. I’m also getting creative and putting the camera on an angle for this shot.

Ebisu

Ebisu

Ebisu

Walking tours for some retired folk, more than likely from out of town.

Ebisu

Ebisu

Away from Garden Palace and it’s pretty much like lots of other places in Japan.

Ebisu

With cool motor bikes to get around on.

Ebisu

Ebisu

If you’re peckish you can stop in for some Octopus at this hole in the wall take-out place.

Ebisu

Then sweeten your taste buds with some Japanese Ice.

Ebisu

There’s NO shortage of colour in Ebisu, one of the things i liked about the place.

Ebisu

The smokers are kept in the confines of the smoking area.

Ebisu

Ebisu has a strong and fit police presence.

Ebisu

Ebisu

Many streets i walked down were veritable treasure troves of bars and clubs, all closed, maybe i’ll need to do the 29 stops again as an after dark special.

Ebisu

Ebisu

It wouldn’t be Japan without a Hostess Bar and some Pachinko.

Ebisu

Ebisu

Ebisu

Ebisu

Parking was free in many places, not right next to the station though.

Ebisu

Ebisu

The in between a ballet school and a restaurant it was straight back to cultural Japan.

Ebisu

Spring has sprung.

The later the afernoon got the more people were out and about, often relaxing in the sun.

Then it was time for the 7 minute journey back home on the Yamanote Line.

Ebisu

Although i could have stayed in a Capsule Hotel if i wanted.

Next week on the 29 Stops of the Yamanote Line it’s time for Gotanda, i haven’t been to Gotanda yet so i’m looking forward to it.

If you ever head back to Ebisu, don’t miss the photography museum.

Oh wow! Neil, you really know your way around! :) Maybe when my wife and I visit Japan, you could take us around? :P

Anyways, I’ve never seen those capsule hotel rooms before and it looks awesome except maybe people can peek in :)

Neil has the best directions and pictures of Tokyo. Thanks for posting Ebisu because I absolutely love that area. It reminds of the best parts of Boston. I didn’t know it was named after the Yebisu beer either. Now I can bring that up to the next girl I bring there.

The mexican restaurant is not that far away from that Armani Jeans store.

Ebisu also has one of the best pizza places in Japan, it’s a Vera Pizza place right by the station. It’s certified by the Napolitan Mayor to have authentic Napolitani pizza and is absolutely amazing!

Duck, what’s up with those people wearing masks around the place? I thought it was a reaction to SARS. Surely they’re not still worried about it?

Yeh mate, like Lisa says, its for pollen and other alergies in many instances and also if someones battling a bout of the flu (like i have the past 2 days) they will wear a mask too … i prefer to have 2 days off work and stay home :)

Motts, my Japanese Friends say it’s for pollen, and I’d bet it’s for pollution too, since I got blasted with grit every time the wind blew during my recent trip to Tokyo.

Wow. Ebisu looks like a nice place.
Was there only once, went to eat at a place called Zetton. It’s near the ebisu JR-station.
A nice and trendy place, loved the design of the restaurant, food and drinks were nice but a bit expensive.
I’m lloking forward for your next stop on the yamanote line.

hi Neil.
Great photos of the area. The Bashi is my local for a “Swift Half” after work.
(which gives away the bank I work for, if you are in finance)
The photography museum is good, but the beer museum is even better!
There’s not much to see in the way of exhibits, but it has a great model and some
photos of the area in 1988 of the Sapporo brewery that encompassed the whole area before it was demolished and reconstructed into what you see today. There is a very popular tasting lounge where you can sample the 4 different beers Sapporo brew for a mere 200 Yen each ( or 400 for a set of 4 small glasses of each)

Hey Jon, not in finance but always partial to a swift half or a full pint if time permits. Glad you liked the photos and i`ll have to get down to the beer museum sometime soon. Cheers.

I spent several years as a delinquent youth back in 1978 and 1979 playing Pachinko at the Pachinko parlor near (almost across) from the main entrance to the subway line in Ebisu. I would ride my bike from Hiroo where I lived or stop off on my way home from ASIJ.

Unfortunately, not one of your pictures looks familiar to me. I guess it has changed a lot. Those were the good old days.

Wow, the capsule hotel is $330 for a single night? At that price you’d think you could get an actual room, I’d figure the capsules would be cheaper.

Nope, 3,300 yen is about $USD40 so its very cheap.

Hey Neil,
Recognized your name surfing (I think it was a link from a link searching for CAM in Ebisu’s Web Address…not sure now, closed the tab). We’re connected on Twitter but haven’t met.
Seeing I’m near the end of my second 2 year block living in Ebisu I was pleased to see so many photo’s of it here – thanks very much! Love Ebisu..
(Yebisu) Beer soon?
Kind regards,
Jason Ball
