Earlier in the week i mentioned the McHotDog Classic and despite the debate whether a Hot Dog that followed i wasn’t deterred and this morning, on route to work, i took the long way round past the golden arches and grabbed one for breakfast.
I went for the McHotDog, minus the set which was coffee and what looked like a hash brown, and opted for the medium coke instead.

On first glance it seemed a little small and i questioned whether it would be enough to be me through to lunch.
It actually looks pretty similar to what the poster depicted, i guess it’s pretty hard to stuff a hot dog up.

Taste? hmmmm, not bad, the bun was soft the sauce and relish were OK, the actual dog though is very typical of the other hot dogs i’ve had in Japan … a little plastic for the want of a better word … all up though, it filled a hole.
As for the should a hot dog have sauce debate, or ketchup if you must call it that, i’m keen to hear from a broader cross section that just a few select Americans that say it’s taboo …. you can also cast 2 votes if you wish.

Interesting how 3 votes for “The best Hot Dog is with Sauce…” equals 75%, and yet somehow 3 votes for “People that say you can’t have sauce…” also equals 75%!
In the UK it’s normal to have cheese, onions, mustard and/or ketchup on them. There’s doesn’t seem to be any rule about how to eat them, except possibly the standard rule for all food in the UK; Make it a large.
Now I’m hungry…
Correct, most countries i’ve been to have a wealth of extras you can smash on them.
I keep meaning to try Nathans in Harajuku. I used to love that place when I lived in NYC…
Sauce. Always. Red & yellow.
Thanks for the tip Chris, will get in there and have a go one time.
The best hot dog I had was in Portugal (sauerkraut, those thin potato sticks, mustard and ketchup), very messy but good.
when you put ketchup on a hot dog, a hole appears in the continuum of time and space …
I’m an American, and while I would say a “standard” hot dog is the hot dog, bun, and ketchup, we certainly can and sometimes do put other things on. My favorite toppings are ketchup and chili, sometimes with cheese sauce and onions on as well.
But if I asked for a “plain” hot dog, I would expect ketchup and nothing else.
I agree, a “plain” hotdog comes with the bun, the dog and sauce … all others are extras. Sometime in Australia a “plain” hot dog comes with onions …. that’s more of a BBQ setting though, a sausage sizzle if you will.
The only McDys I know that has hotdogs is the SkyDom in Toronto (yes I said SkyDom and not the Rogers Centre, it will always be the SkyDom no matter who owns it) And a regular hotdog comes without sauce, you put on your own toppings, I like mine with green olives and ketchup. But usually order a sausage-on-a-bun from the vendors outside the SkyDom.
Love the “SkyDom” point …. i follow a same rule!
For me, chili cheese dogs ftw. Corn dogs aren’t bad too. Oh and pigs in a blanket are awesome as well (not sure if that counts as a hot dog or not).
Also, it’s not unheard of in the US to eat a hot dog plain with out a bun, especially for kids; these people like to cut up a plain hot dog and usually dip them in sauce (ketchup, mustard). Some people cut them up and throw them in something else, like chili. Or maybe that’s just me.
I prefer all beef franks. Other kinds exist though, like pork, turkey, vegetarian, mystery meat, etc.
Apparently the world’s longest hot dog was made in Japan. Oh, remember that professional food eater, Kobayashi? He likes hot dogs lol.
Hey Sean ….. chilli cheese goes OK with me too. Pigs in blankets … what i’d give for some of those here!
Likewise, as long as it walked free in a paddock at some stage i’m happy for it to be served to me by way of sausage in bread or a bun …. topped with cheese and sauce.
Kobayashi lost his crown to a NY fella last year i think ??!!
terrible bloody thing… glad I backed mine up with a Mega Muffin…..
Typical English hotdogs I remember came with onions and mustard, nowadays I’d be more worried about what was in the “dog”. Mustard definitely a must-have, whatever else.
Agreed …. mustard goes with everything for me these days … as does Tabasco sauce.
I was really looking forward to the return of this hot dog to the McDonald’s Japan menu. They last sold them about 10 years ago, and they were fantastic. A true American hot dog, probably imported from the States. Reminded me of the dogs you can buy from street vendors in NYC.
Like you, I headed to my nearest McDonald’s this morning to get one of these dogs. And my reaction was the same as yours — not bad, but not unlike most Japanese-style hot dogs. Too much “chunky” fat inside the casing.
I had hoped for the return of the original McDonald’s Japan dogs. But I guess with continued hand-wringing over American beef, it just wasn’t in the cards.
The “casing” as you put it is SO noticable in Japan … you snap right through it, that’s the bit i hate about the hot dogs here.
I think this is the l last thing I would order at mcdonalds in Japan. The reasons being:
1. when I was in japan I never found a “real” hot dog – just the plasticy ones you described
2. In japan I also had a hard time finding ketchup.. NO KETCHUP on a hot dog? Japanese people consider Ketchup to be healthy so maybe they don’t want to mix it with “unhealthy” mcdonalds food?
Glad it’s not just me that think’s they’re plastic like.
They used to do hot dogs in Mc D’s in England about 8 years ago and I remember the advert now, the song went “hot diggerdy dog doggerty look what you do to me…”
You shouldn’t have said no to the hash brown, Japanese Mac hash browns are the best!!
I hope i don’t get that song in my head!
I actually can’t stand hot dogs or sausage for that matter.. give me a big mac
So that’s it?
Just a plain ol’ hotdog?
For breakfast? Weird. At least toss some eggs or maple syrup or something “breakfasty” on it.
Yeh, bit of a let down i guess … not sure if it’s a permanent part of the menu of not.
hi neil. a bit off topic here. question from chicago. is the logoless presentation dead? half of us love the lounge look and would be sorry to see it go. the other half…there is no one in the middle. we enjoy your other side of the world perspective. please give us an official a first-person observation if the opportunity presents itself at this post…

It’s dead, not sure what happened to the shops though, next time i’m out that way i’ll check it out and do an update.
Yes for sure, i couldn’t eat a Hot Dog without it. ( or should i say can i eat any fast food without sauce?)
Absolutely ketchup is a must and with some chili too. Love it
Yes, LOVE some chilli sauce on my dog.
Hotdogs with ketchup, onions and mustard for me!
You can’t go past mustard …. i like seeded mustard too but that’s probably asking to much from your average Joe hot dog vendor.
German mustard, chilli, cheese, and lots of onions….A perfect dog.
I cant have a HOT D without any sauce (of any kind)!!!…..i found this out when i made some at home and relized after that i had run out of sauce (“tomatoe sauce” to be exact:P)….to my shame instead of running to the convenient store…..i substitued sauce for…MAYO!!..and a little squeeze of lemon!!…..all in all, it wasn’t so bad!!:)…it was an interesting experience that i would suggest for every HOT D and Sauce Lover!:P
Squeeze of lemon hey?? Interesting … will give it a try.
what McDogs!! the Horror oh the Horror.
No Onion!!
Can we get em In australia now.
