Meeting Of The Geeks

October 1, 2008 · 20 comments

I use the term Geeks with affection, and I fall firmly within the category myself.

“The word “Geek” is a slang term, noting individuals as “a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, gaming, etc.” – wikipedia

At last nights gathering, the internet and all things surrounding it was the obsession.

Danny gave me a flag to this get together a few weeks back. It was an interesting mix of people, from bloggers to advertising agencies, google and mozilla staff, entrepreneurs, e-learning companies, youtube vloggers all with plenty of interesting things to get me thinking.

I went there with Glenn and caught up with Ken on the way, he’s got a few pics up now if you’re interested in checking them out.

I also got to have a few beers with Hector, with plenty to talk about seeing as he used to work i the same building as i do now. Check out his English site here, the same site in Spanish is one of the top 10 sites in Spain with 2 million visitors each month … nice work Hector.

I didn’t take too many pics myself, for the most of the night i had my hands full holding a beer, i did manage to get one with Danny and MR.X in the middle (not sure he wants to be outed so i will protect his anonymity for now) … confirmed i can use his real name, Lee from Tokyo Times, as i was walking out the door.

Geek Meetup

I’ve met up with more gaijin in the last few weeks than i have the whole 2 yrs i’ve been in Japan, a decision i made carefully and glad i have done.

There were some standout people i met last night, most notibally (is that even a word?) Yong Fook a web producer of Chinese/ Singaporean and English decent, he’s got some really intersting stuff going on that intend looking into further.

Another guy i have to mention was this fella, i love this sort of thing.

He’s a keen musician and always dreamt of a world tour playing in a band, so he’s set it up and done it from his home.  As the flyer shows, he’s performed in Florence, Stockholm, London, San Fransisco, New York and Tokyo.

All concerts are performed in the evening at the respective local time, as you would expect with a normal concert, but he’s doing it from Tokyo so he’s getting up at all hours of the day and night to perform. He’s got some great videos and he’s quite the entertainer.

Anyway, the night was a lot of fun and it’s given me plenty to think about and increased my enthusiasm for what’s possible on the internet. Expect some changes about the place, maybe big maybe small i’m not sure yet.

Danny was kind enough to mail me too about this. Sorry I couldn’t make it, I live at 35,000 yen from Tokyo (plane return ticket) and was planning to go later this month already.

I’d like to meet you some day!

Sounds like a fun and informative gathering – I will look forward seeing some of the changes that you are planning as a result…

Now I wish I could call myself a geek so I could get invites to events like this one and be outed by you :)

Hmm. Not the crowd I work with just recently. I work with punk rocker/gothic freaks. But back in high school, I was kinda geeky. Only because I ace my classes. But I wanted a cool image. So I worked on that. After high school, I got back to just being a normal guy. Not geeky nor cool.

Wow man, I know this is a little bit of an old article, but I can’t believe I’ve met you before! I don’t know why the name didn’t ring a bell when you told me the name of your blog, lol. I have been subscribed for a while before that, but hadn’t read any articles with your picture included before then, so when you said the name I don’t know why the light bulb didn’t go off in my head first, lol.

Anywayz, You have a great site here and I am especially happy that you own your own domain name so I can view it on my work computer while I do other “work” related activites.

Stay black dude.
