You misunderstood something..The guys on Kabukicho as well as those on the picture with your friend are not doing nanpa to find someone to sleep with..they are HOSTS and they want the girls to eventually come to the clubs where they work and pay for their drinks and conversation and make them more successful hosts ..it's the opposite of the hostess business, and they aim at girls walking alone in Kabukicho and sometimes Shibuya. They might have a coffee with the girl or some sms but the main goal is to get them coming to their clubs and thus go up in the host hierarchy. They don't sleep with the female clients officially but you can see on Japanese tv girls crying, going broke for having paid too much for sleeping with hosts...They even produce cds and magazine,go to check at Tower records in Shibuya.

Tom,
Of course the girls on the street speak terrible English, it's Japan, and they are Japanese? Imagine some Indian guy in the US "Those guys on the street speak terrible Indian!" Duh.. if you are going to live in Japan, learn the language.

It's a common misconception that those guys dressed like that are doing 'nampa' - infact they're actually just trying to get girls to work in hostess bars, or do 'modelling' (usually AV shoots). The guys who are actualy doing the real nampa are dressed normally so as not to appear so 'charai' (slut-like) and they're the guys that have the most success too.

I hope I was in that crowd on hikkae hashi that day!

It's not so uncommon for the act of nanpa when you equate it to something familiar... For example, Lenox Mall in Atlanta in the States (where I live now) is prime girl-hunting territory on any weekend. Or the beach promenades of Rio in Brazil. it may be different in terms of the cultures represented, but the goal has been the same since the dawn of time, no?

Haha Neil. Hikkake-bashi is insane - I walked on that bridge and I got frisked at least three times by Japanese men asking for digits.
I don't see why all these man waste their time standing on the bridge. They're easily the best-looking in Osaka!

One more trick that works... if it's daytime, try the " tasuketeeee i'm lost! " on a cute j girl... pretend u need help finding a subway station and when they give u directions, pretend she just saved ur life and u insist on treating her to dinner. This trick only works in daytime... at night, they kinda know ur pulling their leg.
