An unsuspecting passenger who flew to Tokyo is carrying one million yen’s worth of cannabis compliments of customs authorities after a bungled exercise involving sniffer dogs.
An officer at Narita International Airport yesterday stuffed 142 grams of the drug into the side pocket of a randomly-selected black suitcase coming off an overseas flight so that the animal could detect it.
“The dog couldn’t find it and the officer also forgot which bag he put it in,” a customs office spokeswoman said.
“If by some chance passengers find it in their suitcase, we’re asking them to return it.”
The 38-year-old officer was quoted by the spokeswoman as saying: “I knew that using passengers’ bags (for sniffer dog training) is prohibited, but I did it because I wanted to improve the sniffer dog’s ability.”
He was reprimanded by the head of customs at Narita airport.
“This case was extremely regrettable. I would like to deeply apologise,” said the airport’s customs chief Manpei Tanaka.
The cannabis, which has a street value of one million yen ($A10,100), was in a metal box wrapped with newspapers.
Japan strictly prohibits both hard and soft drugs, with people imprisoned for possession of even small amounts of cannabis.

Just wanted to let you know that Japan Probe had this covered yesterday with video, in case you’re interested.
I do remember seeing a headline re-hashish now you mention it Deas. I didn’t watch the clip at the time though. I tend to get more information about Japan from Australian News Papers these days …. Japan features very prominantly in the news there.
I’d like Japan getting their citizens to know how hard drugs are nicotine and caffeine. I can’t find sense in such strict policies when one can’t go into a restaurant and enjoy a meal without smelling the smoke of cigarettes.
hehe… pretty lame what they did.
LOL
I remember the story of the french bomb squad who did a bomb-sniffing test with real explosives and they lost the baggage
wow im lovin that french story,,,, what happen with the bomb?
Looks like the fella who took the maryjane home returned the goods -
Why would they do silly training like that? And the dog was too lame to even sniff it out. Shows how reliable all this terrorist protection crap is.
I hope the poor bastard wasn’t traveling on to someplace like Singapore without checking the bag.
Yeh, try explaining that one!
I remember hearing about this a while ago. Did they ever recover it?
I’m not sure to be honest with you.
HAHAHAHAHAHA, the officer was reprimanded? I would’ve fired his ass! Not only did he do a training exercise for the dog using real traveler’s bags, he was willing to obviously waste that person’s time provided the dog found it! Which it didn’t! THEN, dumb ass officer couldn’t even remember which bag he placed it on?!!! hahahaha
NO, you will NOT get your weed back…the person’s bag you placed it in is either smoking it, selling it, or simply using it as evidence to prepare his lawsuit against you…fucking idiot.

Its not like people are going to smuggle terrorists in their hand luggage.
