Odaiba

Sunday i took a trip out to Odaiba, 2 trains and about 40 minutes from home.

Odaiba (お台場) is a large artificial island in Tokyo, Japan, featuring many hypermodern and just plain strange looking buildings.

Odaiba was originally constructed in 1853 by the Tokugawa shogunate as a series of 6 fortresses in order to protect Tokyo from attack by sea, the primary threat being Commodore Matthew Perry’s Black Ships, which had arrived in the same year. Daiba in Japanese refers to the cannon batteries placed on the islands.

The area is now a very popular shopping and entertainment destination featuring attractions such as Decks Tokyo Beach, Aquacity Odaiba, Museum of Maritime Science, National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Oedo Onsen Monogatari, Palette Town, Venus Fort, Sun Walk, Tokyo Big Site and the list goes on.

Odaiba

Odaiba is also home to many businesses including, the Fuji TV Building, Panasonic Centre, Telecom Centre, Mega Web.

I had originally intended heading to Odaiba for a look around then over to Tokyo Big Site to have a look at the Tokyo International Anime Show but after a slow start to the day and the weather turning bad i only managed to get a few hours around Odaiba in and taking a few photos was harder and harder as the day wore on.

Looking towards Rainbow Bridge which connects Tokyo to Odaiba.

Odaiba

Looking back towards Tokyo over Tokyo Bay.

Odaiba

Before the weather changed there were quite a few Hanami parties going on over at Odaiba Island.

Odaiba

The Fuji TV Building, i’m not sure what goes in inside the sphere.

Odaiba

There are plenty of water craft offering tours through Tokyo Bay and the surrounding water ways.

Odaiba

There were an amazing number of pets over on Odaiba Island.

Odaiba

Shops to cater for the animal lover. This shop was devoted to cats, everything you could possibly buy for your cat.

Odaiba

There were also plenty of stores that also feature on the mainland as well as 2 malls, Island Mall and Seaside Mall.

Odaiba

Odaiba Island has plenty to keep the youngsters interested.

Safety comes first on Odaiba Island with Lubey, Pokey and Ribbie leading the way.

Your final picture was too funny! Safety first….
I always find it a little bit odd seeing the miniature Statue of Liberty out there. I’ve been I’ve been meaning to go back but every time I’ve had the chance the weather doesn’t cooperate – kudos to you for braving the rain and cold.

That was an awesome photoview of Japan probably better of that area then I’ve seen even though my older brother is stationed there. It’s a beautiful country with a lot of very neat groups of people. Thanks for sharing with us.

Odaiba’s supposed to be a place where kids go on dates, but if I were there on a date, I’d get myself into trouble with my girl by looking at all of the other eye candy walking around.

Neil,
Pics look nice of Odaiba. I recently got to ride on the ”nightview train” 夜景列車 and have the video up on my blog. They turn off all the lights on the train for 1 train ride only. its once a year. pretty lucky!

What interest me more from Japan is the weather… My friend told me that the weather is fresh and cool. I can see it from your picture…The sun is not too bright. I like it.
