Otafuku Okonomiyaki In Yoyogi

September 30, 2008 · 16 comments

Not wanting to break tradition, and continuing on with the 709 day trend, i ate out for dinner last night.

Okonomiyaki was the cuisine i was after and it was on the recommendation of my buddy from the local Sushi bar that we hit Otafuku in Yoyogi.

Okonomiyaki is compared to a pizza or pancake when describing it to foreigners and can come in various forms depending on what part of Japan you’re in.

Last nights was Hiroshima style whether the ingredients consisting of cabbage, bacon, squid, prawms, peppers, cheese etc were layered rather than mixed together.

First up for though, i started with a cheese and onion omelette.

Even better, i didn’t have to cook it myself which is often the done thing at Okonomiyai restaurants, some like that and it can be fun but i’m lazy when it comes to cooking.

Then presented with decisions i went for the easy option, Osuseme …. which equates to whatever you recommend.

Next course was hotate with peppers, squid and prawns.

Lastly , getting a little full it was time for the house special Okonomiyaki … which indeed it was.

Absolutely fantastic feed and combined with a few beers it was a great way to kick off another week of dining out in Japan.

X marks the spot, same street as Yamano Tower … sure you know it.

Geez… that looks good. There’s nothing like having an omelette for dinner. What all was in the house special?

The house special was the last few photos, not sure how it made it any different to anything else but it was great. I’d be guessing if i said what was in it, i will be back there later this week and will get another and will pay more attention.

I haven’t managed to try Okonomiyaki yet but it’s definitely on the list now! I was taken by those scallops too – one of the wonderful surprises about Japan you expect the fish but the shellfish is amazing too!!

I went again last night …. you have to try it Danielle, it’s great. There’s a few different cooking styles but they’re all delicious.
