Sarushima Or Monkey Island

June 24, 2008 · 13 comments

Sarushima or Monkey Island as it translates into English was location of Saturdays festivities. On the back of a big night out with work Friday night it was an early start having to meet the others from the local Sushi bar at Shinagawa station at 9.30am.

Unfortunately there are no actual Monkeys on the Island, no any of the real kind, however some members from my group put their best foot forward to make up for it.

Like any party in Japan, the plan is pretty simple …. lots of food and lots of drink then off to the 2nd and 3rd parties later in the night.

All the grog and food was bought in Yokosuka with the BBQ, utensils and tables and chairs etc … hired from the Island. It’s a captive market and they don’t miss you with the prices either.

Saturday was a pretty over cast day but the rain stayed away for the most part.

I think the numbers visiting the Island were down for the day with really only 2 large groups there for the duration, ours and 1 other. I’m sure on a hot summers day it’s teaming with people.

After a short 10 minute boat ride for 1200 yen per head you arrive at Sarushima Island.

A pretty easy trip by anyones standards and not exactly rough water so the chance of getting seasick is minimal …. well, on the way over anyway.

The other group certainly were all hands on deck getting their camp set-up.

Our guys sore the BBQ as the priority.

With a few guys setting up a tent for some shade or protection from the rain if it came. I preferred to check and make sure the beers were O.K.

All the stuff can be hired from the shop up on the hill where there was toilet facilites and also a restaurant type set-up too.

A BBQ Japanese style sure is a random affair. It’s like an unnofficial competition to see how much meat you can get on the hot plate.

The other group amused themselves with frissbee, badminton and various other sports.

While ours concentrated on eating and drinking.

Sarushima

Not exactly the white beaches i’m used to from back home but enjoyable nonetheless.

The rain didn’t set in until later in the day as we started to make our way back to the main land.

Lots of weary bodies after a day at Sarushima.

Reminds me of camping on various islands around Seattle on the Puget Sound.

Make sure there’s some sun in the next post, will ya?

Why no monkeys? Where were the monkeys? An island named Sarushima, but no monkeys?
