Sashimi In Shibuya

June 23, 2009 · 20 comments

I went for a bite to eat with a friend last night a Sashimi place in Dogenzaka.

I generally go the easy options when i eat raw fish … Nigiri Sushi and nothing too adventerous at that.  Last night i wasn`t in charge of the menu so it was a bit out of my comfort zone.

Sashimi

Despite my initial hesitation i gave everything a go and enjoyed most of it.

The cooked fish head was right up my alled though, had it a few times and recommend it to anyone.

Sashimi

But when push comes to shove i guess i tend to go places i`m a bit more familiar with the whole menu, like last Friday nights Yakatori … fantastic.

Yakitori

Been a bit slow around here these days due to some work issues keeping away from regular posting.

That will be over soon so it will be back to normal …. when maybe not “normal” but i`ll be writing a bit more.

I’ll try almost anything if, and only if, my Friends have tried it beforehand, lol.

How does one eat fish heads? Haven’t tried very many seafood dishes, most of them very plain [including the salmon sushi rolls you find everywhere, yum, but safe].

Fish heads are a little tricky …… as in, not a whole lot of easily gettable meat, when you do pick around a bit you can get a good feed off of them though.

You can also cook them in curry: Fish head curry, with an optional side of noodles.
On another note, the fish in the picture seems to have really big eyes.

I’m also interested in knowing how you eat a fish head. It looks like there isn’t much to eat on it, or do you eat the insides?

Yeh, mainly on the inside, i guess the cheek area. Certainly won’t fill you up on it’s own though.

Just a small correction… it’s Dogenzaka… not “g” but “K”
Cheers

Granted i did take the photo when it was 1/2 eaten. The place was a little more up market, not your sushi train type place. Many tables were reserved and the clientele was mainly salary men and people with some coin to spend.

I hear the eyeballs are particularly cherished as a delicacy :)

Yes fish eyeballs are great – always grab them when fish head’s on the menu. Plus just about every fleshy part on them.

What i have when i eat Nigiri and what’s selected for me when it’s Sashimi are very different …. even asking for squid the other night, served as Sashimi was very different.

The yakitori looks splendid – is it just the zoom or are they actually that huge a serving?
