Seijin No Hi

January 12, 2009 · 17 comments

I once again braved the cold and headed out to grab some photos of todays Seijin No Hi which in English is the Coming Of Age Day.

Anyone turning 20 this year is invited by their local ward to attend a ceremony which officially welcomes them to adulthood. It`s a busy day around all the shrines and major hotels in Japan and after formalities are done it`s not uncommon for many of the new “Adults” to go to the nearest Izakaya and get on the turps.

I went to Meiji Jingu this morning then on to the Keio Plaza hotel and took some photos and a short movie.

I’m sure on tonights news there’ll be lots of “aftermath” footage. Last nights news was too early …. it just had the days festivities.

I saw some of the gals out and about today. Some of them looked really cute! Why we never developed such a tradition in America I will never understand.

Love your pics, thanks for sharing!
Snow started to fall at 3pm indeed, then stopped a minute later, then started again. Was at Shibuya at the time, since some of the streets near 109 were closed for street artists.

Haha – that photo of the guys at the end is superb – the chap in the grey shorts and bowtie is brilliant!
I stumbled upon coming of age day the very first time i went to Toko in 2006, but felt kinda bad taking photos of the girls as its a family occasion and their parents were with them. Its kinda like taking a photo of someone elses wedding…
