Sensational Shinjuku Ramen!

August 20, 2008 · 21 comments

Last week while most people were enjoying Obon summer vacation in Japan i was working.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though, one of the upsides was i was able to work out of the Shinjuku office which not only meant i reduced my 3 + hrs traveling time per day down to a 10 minute walk to and from the office. Another, was i got to try more of the many different lunch options Shinjuku has to offer.

I took a colleague to Hinoki Ramen which is located just behind Takeshimaya one day, which he loved, and he returned the favour to me later in the week by introducing me to Tenka Ippin Ramen, on the condition i try the “こってり (kotteri)”. No problem there.

Prior to heading off the guys at work were divided, some liked it and some hated it …. for me breaking away from my usual flavour was going to be tough, but i’m glad i did.

I have no idea what the base was but i loved it and will be back for sure. Not sure whether it’s up to Billy’s standard, he’s had the bar set high lately but i’m sure he’d give it a go and tell me.

Shinjuku Ramen

Here’s the map to the shop in Shinjuku West Exit vicinity. There’s many more locations in and around Japan so if you’re a Ramen lover, do yourself a favour and get in and try this one, it’s sensational!

That looks interesting, is it chicken meat? How was the taste like?

The meat you can see is Chashew, whatever that is, beef sort of thing i think. The broth is very different … quite creamy … bloody delicious it is.

Ironically I know what chashew is, because it is well-known here in Singapore. Roasted meat, usually of pork or chicken. It is however cooked a different way in your ramen meal. I must taste that broth, it looks bloody delicious indeed.

Nice, I still love my Jiro Ramen every once in a while, though its probably much better tasting in winter.

I think “Charsiu” is usually pork. In Hawaii anyway. By the way, that ramen looks killaz!!!

There you go, you’ve heard it straight from the Tong Master himself, Mr BBQ …. Pork it is. And thanks for the spelling Chris, usually only see it in Katakana … actually, only ever see it in Katakana.

No probs Danny …. i’m usually within a stones throw of Shinjuku and Yoyogi throughout the weekend, sure you know a few good eating spots around the place too.

Will let you know Billy, might have to stretch the legs and get into Tasu Itchi for a beer sometime soon too, at least while it’s still hot.

I am currently in Seoul, South Korea and I am really impressed with variety of food they have here. My favourite is bulgogi (grilled meat, that has to be put into salad leave with garlic and special filling) and sure gimbap (some type of Korea sushi, if I can call it like this). Anyway, I like Japanese food more but Korea still rocks :)

To Neil, Danny and Billy

My homebrewing friend (not me, of course, because homebrewing is illegal in Japan) suggests hooking up for some snacks and homemade hooch before heading out one weekend for some tasty ramen, if you have the time. :)

Always have time JT ….. my weekends are pretty loose. I know Saturdays are no good for Billy though.

Just read this comment.

Homemade hooch, eh? I’ve been to Tennessee, Alabama,… all the toothless, inbred states, but I’ve never tried the stuff. It would be cool if the first time was in Japan.

Oh man, how can you not know what chashu is! It’s roasted pork loin…fantastic.
If you guys ever get to Kyushu, you have to try Ichiran. The best tonkatsu Ramen ever. You can customize to an amazing extent–the richness of the broth, the firmness of the noodles, how much of everything, and another serving of noodles is only 150 yen.
I am also a fan of ikkyu, but I think that’s mostly a Yamaguchi thing; can’t imagine you’d ever make it down here.

Yeh Jim, i like lots of foods but dont ‘actually’ know what they are a lot of the time ….know what it is, but ask me what animal it came from and it’s often a guess.

Will take your suggestion when i get to Kyushu, i won’t rule anywhere in Japan out especially somewhere serving some great Ramen.

Спасибочки автору. Возможно, в будущем я и правда реализую подобную затею. :)
