Social Networking In Japan

June 29, 2008 · 19 comments

Last night i went to Shibuya and did some social networking … the old fashioned way, in a crowded bar with a few beers under the belt.

It’s a great night out at Shibuya and certainly a hive of activity for the early 20’s to late 30’s crowd … carefully worded so i can still justify getting out that way.

I went to a bar suggested to me by Glenn, it’s a standing bar that gets going early and gets going well.

There’s no shortage of Gaijin in there on a Saturday night but not like Roppongi, it’s a much better crowd. Unlike many bars in Roppongi, there’s quite a few native Japanese speakers in there too so all round it’s a winner of a place for me.

Beers are 300 yen, food is cheap and plentiful and the conversation in free …. plus they open at 5pm which is right up my alley, early in and early out … none of this 10pm start malarki.

Other more modern methods of Social Networking are the ever increasing internet based sites that, depending on how you use them, can add value or at least a form of entertainment to your life … you might even make a few Friends.

Here’s a list of the sites i use and my profile on them should you want to connect with me.

Facebook – Value Add and a great way of keeping up to date with Friends from all over the world. I am officially a fan of Facebook after taking a while to get in to it.

Mixi – Japanese Social site in Japanese only, great method for learning Japanese although difficult at first. I believe it has now been locked down a little, it’s always been invite only but you need a local keitai to register an account.

JapanSoc – New up and coming site specialising in Japan related news and information. A great source for Japan related info with an ever increasing membership.

Twitter – Still not totally convinced of the value of Twitter but do from time to time login and have picked up some good links from there.

LinkedIn – Professional Network site that is increasing in popularity now. Good place to have your resume if you’re open to employment opportunities.

Vimeo – where i’m uploading all my new videos check those out from time to time.

And then there’s the less user interactive sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Technorati, del.icio.us and Propeller all of which i’m an active user so feel free to add me on any or all of those.

That Shibuya pub is called Tasu Ichi (Plus One). It’s usually the first stop for me and my mates when we want to get our beer on for cheap. Hard to move in there, though.

Yep, that’s the one Billy. Hard to move i agree, need to get there early to secure a good spot …. hard to move later means plenty of opportunity to meet people (girls).

Looks like a cool place. Where in Shibuya is it located?

If you walk out of Shibuya station, Hachiko exit and head across the crossing and go down the road pictured in the 3rd photo ….. the keep going straight.

5 minute walk from the station ….. http://gmap.jp/shop-10919.html

Does tasu ichi still have the big inflatable beer out front? If that’s still there it’s impossible to miss. Across the street and on the way back to the station just a bit is the Aldgate, which has one of the better beer on tap selections around. Maybe the best in Shibuya.

Don’t recall seeing the beer Ken so it must be gone.

Yeah, Aldgate is nice. Good atmosphere. Those stairs are dangerous after you’ve had a few, though.

Actually, one place I’d recommend in Shibuya is the Treasure Chest. It’s pretty new, a bit further from the station and very free of the usual foreign crowd, if that makes sense. Great music as well.

tasu rules, nearly went there last night and all.. next time we bump into each other neil we’ll have to hit it for one or two! here’s a couple of other views of the bar, from my own nights of inebriated enjoyment:

as ken said, the treasure chest is also a great place to hit when in shibuya, just a couple of blocks form tasu, tucked into the maruyamacho love hotels. the treasure chest also has a very interesting entertainment at times, well worth the look:

I think most of us still need old fashion social networking although the modern one has become trend. For me meeting other peoples physically is still necessary.
