Sony Rolly Sound Entertainment Player

January 13, 2008 · 9 comments

I`d seen this new gadget pop up in a few places but never really knew what it actually did. After a little research the Rolly looks like a pretty neat portable music player with the added visual tricks it can perform.

You can get your music in to the Rolly via USB, the software needed is currently Windows only so Mac users will need an emulator … or use a Windows machine. At this stage the Sonic Stage Software only runs on a Japanese OS, great for me but not so good for many, so you`ll need to get a Region Free version of it if you want to run on any version of Windows.

For a great review from a first hand owner of the Rolly stop over to Danny Choo`s Rolly Review, he was lucky enough t get a freebie to test and he`s a big fan of it.

Sony Rolly

There`s more and more videos popping up on You Tube and you can go straight here to Sony for all the technical specs on the Rolly.

The Rolly is shaping up to be a great prize for an upcoming contest i`m working on.

I saw this in Akihabara and I never got it. I still don’t get it. I’m not sure why a robot needed to be merged with an MP3 player.

Would be cool to see Aibo try and bite it for being a really annoying gadget…

This device really reminds me of the nabaztag/tag, the French wi-fi connected “rabbit” with programmable ears.
There’s a note on the Rolly and Nabaztag at techtonic.org, including links to the site (in Japanese) where you can download “motions” that other users have already created for their Rollys.

This little thing is a trip. I saw it at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Vegas last week. I walked up to the Sony booth and saw all these people gathered around something. I thought it was going to be a cool new phone or something. Instead, I found the Rolly doing its thing and performing for everyone. Pretty cool! Though, I think the novelty would wear off in a couple of weeks.
