I remember about ten years ago when a new guy came to my Chinese class. I was clueless for one whole month whether <i>it</i> was a guy or a girl and I had to ask. Ended up being a <strike>trap</strike> guy in the end, but it has happened the other way around, where I'm 99.9% sure it's a guy and ends up being a woman. I think Taiwanese people are even more subject to this since teenagers are even skinnier (!) than Japanese.
