If nothing else it’s a catchy name but in this case Tantakatan is so much more, it’s a tasty drink that features highly on my list of vices these days.
As part of my “Eating Better” plan for this year i’ve also had to look at what i’m drinking and while i can never replace beer i can reduce my intake considerably by drinking Tantakatun.
I can’t begin to describe the taste of it, i guess flowery would be a start. It’s very aromatic which makes it appealing and it can either be served straight or with water, i take mine with water as you can see here with my bottle keep at the local restaurant.

Tantakatun is in the Shochu family, a type of distilled beverage native to Japan and this particular one comes from Hokkaido with a main ingredient of Shiso.
The bonenkai (忘年会 – forget the year gathering) season is officially over at the end of the year and now a new round of shinenkai (新年会 – new year gathering) will begin.
One of my last soiree’s for 2008 was held by the master from my local Okonomiyaki restaurant and a great night it was.

Unfortunately the photos only reflect dinner and drinks.
今年もよろしくお願いします。
As another year ends and the new one begins there’s lots of things out of my control ….. one thing firmly in my control is developing healthier eating habits.
The new “diet” for the want of a better word isn’t a New Years Resolution, it’s a necessity. I’ve smartened my eating habits up considerably in the last few weeks and will continue to refine going forward into 2009.
I don’t think Japan is an overly easy place to eat healthily, not when you love Ramen and eating out every day as much as i do, but stocking the pantry and fridge with some healthy options is a good start.

I’m all ears if you have any suggestions for places to eat and specifically types of food that can be easily bought in Japan that fall into a semi healthy category.
All the best for a happy and healthy 2009 and whatever else you’re striving to achieve.
