Mishima

January 14, 2009 · 23 comments

I didn’t really have that much time off over Xmas, only really the national holidays so i didn’t get too far out of my own back yard … with the exception of a day trip on a bus to Mishima which is a few hours south of Tokyo.

One of the guys from my local karaoke bar, who also happens to live in the building next door to me, gave me the heads up about a day trip with the other regulars, why not give it a crack i thought.

It’s usually not my thing and considering i was the youngest person by far i was a bit apprehensive that i’d have a shit time, quiet the opposite, it was lots of fun and for 10,000 not too badly priced.

Once the bus got going at 8am sharp and my neighbour cracked a fresh bottle of whiskey i knew things were on the up.

Seijin No Hi

January 12, 2009 · 17 comments

I once again braved the cold and headed out to grab some photos of todays Seijin No Hi which in English is the Coming Of Age Day.

Anyone turning 20 this year is invited by their local ward to attend a ceremony which officially welcomes them to adulthood. It`s a busy day around all the shrines and major hotels in Japan and after formalities are done it`s not uncommon for many of the new “Adults” to go to the nearest Izakaya and get on the turps.

I went to Meiji Jingu this morning then on to the Keio Plaza hotel and took some photos and a short movie.

It never ceases to amaze me what how there's not a lot of wasted space in Japan.

On my morning walk to the station i'm forever looking around to see what i can see, take this small Shrine for example … tucked inbetween 2 buildings and  in front of an elevator.
