Tiny Tokyo Apartment

April 22, 2009 · 22 comments

I saw this tiny Tokyo apartment yesterday on Akihabara News and it got me thinking, if i had to live in this sort of apartment i wouldn’t be living in Japan.

I can understand limitations in the size of the apartment you live in due to cost so in that case i’d move further out and commute a bit more.

For my way of thinking, if i lived in this apartment i would be out EVERY night of the week thus spending a lot more on entertainment and so on.

This apartment costs 50,000 yen and is situated close to Tokyo station and it a grand 6m2 in size.

Granted Tokyo is as expensive as it gets in Japan but for ~80,000 you’d at least be able to get something big enough to accommodate a couch or fold out bed, with room for a TV and some other comforts.

Post Updated to include picture of bathroom – taken from Akihabara news.

Tiny Tokyo Apartment

Shower, toilet, sink …. entire wet area all in one.

Like i said, i’m sure the added expense of living in an apartment that can only function as somewhere to sleep, just barely, incurrs additional spending that could be front loaded on the monthly costs to afford some better digs.

Could you live in an apartment this small?

It’s small, but if I didn’t have my music stuff, I could live in it. My Boston one isn’t that much bigger…

Wow reality check! For the price they ask to rent this I can get about 3-4 times as big a place where I live! I’d move a bit out and commute too.

My Chevy Aveo is bigger than that apartment.

Hell, my kitchen is twice the size of the entire apartment and I live in a 1200 sq ft town house.

I could crash there for one or two days but I wouldn’t want to live there. I’d rather commute then…

If you used it as a second home, somewhere to shower, change clothes and sleep 1 or 2 nights a week then it might be OK.

I actually live in a place just like that. Granted its a dormitory and I’m paying a whopping 12,000 yen per month (20 min train from Shinjuku). The bathroom and kitchen are exactly the same as that photo, including hidable toilet. I find it completely fine to live in, but there is a common room with couch, TV etc outside, so that makes it a little more comfortable.
My room also fits a single bed + desk + wardrobe, but with little space to spare.

Though all that being said I wouldn’t want to stay any longer than the year that I’m here.

If yours fits a single bed, desk and wardrobe then you have this one covered! Also taking into account only paying 12,000 per month you’re definitely in front. Short term is OK but long term no way.

Looks just like my first apartment in Abeno, Osaka. I lasted a year.

I could definitely deal with it, but I’m sure I’d get cabin fever much more quickly than I do in my current 1-bedroom apt in Manhattan. Still, if I had a gig in Japan that paid well enough, I’d totally be willing to live there.

“if I had a gig in Japan that paid well enough” then you’d be able to get some pretty good digs Pete believe me …. it’s amazing what you can get for a bit more, considering you don’t have car costs, work pays train / bus commute, tax is low in Japan etc …

This apartment is 6m2 … my apartment is a shade under 50m2, granted i pay a fair bit more, split the middle and get something around 30m2 and you’re doing alright, for probably about 120,000 per month.

this looks like my Friends place in toyko. and he does spend all his money on going out cause his place is too damn small. i wanted to visit him, but he said it would either be me or him in the room. so i decided to skip it!

So in the end his living expenses end up just the same if not more than someone paying twice that each month.
