Watch Japanese TV Online

January 26, 2009 · 25 comments

A while back i wrote about my means for satisfying my Western TV viewing by downloading tv shows and the other day this you beaut iPhone application called Ustream.

Well now i’ve come across this great little application called KeyHoleTV is a means for anyone living outside of Japan getting their fix of Japanese TV for FREE.

KeyHoleTV

How does it work i hear you ask? There’s a small program you need to install from the KeyHoleTV site first.

Once you’ve downloaded and have the executable on your system it’s just a matter of installing and selecting the language you desire.

KeyHoleTV

Now the good part ….  run the application and start watching a plethora of Japanese TV online for free.

I often whinge about some of the shite on Japanese TV but i’m sure for lovers of Anime and anyone wanting to learn Japanese this would be extremely useful.

Japanese people living abroad would also find this a very handy way of keeping up to speed with what’s happening back home.

KeyHoleTV

From all accounts the site does seem to go down from time to time but hey it’s free so there’s not much cause for complaint.

Check out the Japanese or English version of the KeyHoleTV and here’s a TV Guide for what’s on in Japan at any given time.

Thanks for this. Works well from here in the UK. Learning some Japanese at the moment, hoping to move over in a couple of years so this is quite useful :)

My wife keeps going on about a way that you can have American TV transmitted to Japan via the internet. Anyone know the name of the software?

Good to hear man. Always good having a win with this sort of thing. F.R.E.E is good.

I’ve been using LiveStation for awhile. Works on the Mac and the PC.

It’s a program that basically aggregates streaming television from everywhere. There are a bunch of channels that they themselves have added to their list, but users are free to submit their own as well. Right now TBS and NHK are on there in addition to a host of other Japanese stations.

installation was quick and easy enough. Taking a look at some of the channels, there seems to also be radio

I would however like to know what this “Chu! Channel” is and why it has a password, and if possible… the password itself :D

Yeh i noticed there were a few password protected channels, i guess this is because anyone can host a program and some people want to restrict their audience. I don’t think we’re missing out on much, i hope not anyway!

Hey Neil, did you find any sports being shown on the channels available, such as the J-League or baseball? Cheers for sharing the info!

I haven`t specifically on this application but i do see it all the time on free to air TV here so I`m guessing it will be on there …. just a matter of getting the timing right. Try NHK and TV Tokyo … usually seems to be on Monday thru Wednesday Japan time.

Nice song by the way …… Dear My Friends and happy birthday for a few weeks back.

Hello there. Thank you so much for introducing this program. I lived in Japan for 10 months and when I came back to England I started to miss some aspects of Japanese TV (I used to enjoy watching a show called Pressure Study), I’m studying Japanese at university now so this will definitely help a lot with my studies. Thanks once agan!!
