Yoyogi Ramen

Prior to moving to Japan i had never eaten Ramen, now i can’t live without it. Most weekends for lunch i visit a local Ramen shop in Yoyogi or if i’m visiting a new station on the JR Yamanote Line then i’ll get my fix there.

Ramen comes in all different flavours and naturally i’ve got my favourites. I generally lean towards a Miso base with either a flavouring of Onion or Chashew with an Egg for topping.

One of the only good things about working in Hon-Atsugi is the Ramen down that way is good, very good, and it’s hard to get anything close to it back up here in Tokyo. Luckily for me i have a good shop a few minutes walk from home, just in front of the North Exit of Yoyogi station.

Today i went for the Negi (Onion) Miso Ramen, and once again it hit the spot.

Ramen

It’s a very Japanese thing to do, taking photographs of your food that is, and i find myself doing it more and more these days.

Going through my phone last week after my trip to Nagoya i was surprised to see how many photos of past Ramen experiences i had. Here’s some of the favourites from Hon-Atsugi and in and around where i live.

As i continue the 29 stops of the JR Yamanote Line series i’ll make sure i have Ramen for lunch, it will probably become a series of its own.

I’m with you, Neil; It’s miso ramen all the way for me. I don’t mind tonkotsu, but the odor that comes wafting out of tonkotsu ramen shops often puts me off. By the way, the best ramen I’ve ever had in Japan was in Shiroishi City, in Miyagi Prefecture; A place called ‘Matsuri’ - goofy name, I know. In Hakata, the best ramen I had wasn’t tonkotsu, but togarashi (hot pepper) ramen.
I’ll have to check out Hon-Atsugi ramen this Golden Week.

You guys have to branch out to udon - like ramen, it’s a cheap and delicious lunch. I stick with the kake (plain) and you have to try bukake which is with lemon and grated daikon. Oishi!

Try Manmaru - it a self serve chain where you pick your own tempura and other sides to go with your udon (served hot or cold). They also serve curry rice. I had a medium kake today with two tempura shrimp for under Y500!

Funny thing to know that it’s quite common for Japanese to photograph their food. The first time I tumbled onto that was reading about Dr NakaMats, the ‘Edison of Japan’, who photographs his every meal and intends to live to 120+.

It is very interesting to see that there are sooo many different types of ramen soups. The only one I’ve eaten is probably very similar to your 4th pic.

There’s something about Japanese food that makes you do this, take a picture I mean. I’m not Japanese nor am I in Japan, but when I eat Japanese food, I take a picture of it.

Now you made me all hungry for ramen!

damn neil, i’m so hungry right now :)
I would do anything to eat a bowl of pork-ramen from that little and small 5 place ramenya in kyoto, kiyamachi-street - Sanjyo (Near S&D), i found last year.
Eating ramen after clubbing and drinking the whole night -> Heaven on earth
LOL

I used to be a big ramen fan, but that stuff contributes to a gut if you aren’t careful. I used to hit this ramen shop in Ashiya, Kobe that was real nice.

What made me laugh was that there is a bottle of beer and a box of kleenex in just about every shot. What are you doing at these raamen places besides eating raamen???? ;-)

Nothing untoward that’s for sure. A runny nose is often the bi-product of eating hot and spicy Ramen … for me anyway, so they do come in handy.

I take pictures of everything I eat (http://www.flickr.com/lisaeaton). This just confirms my suspicions that I am really Japanese!
